Time for the Gorge
speedsters to hang their head in shame; not only have the kiters of
new England taken top spot the Maui Mob made a daring move and brought
in the big guns to claim second spot and top windsurfing team. August
28th saw the return of the VMax speed challenge to the islands with
Pieter "The Flying Dutchman" Bijl taking the honors followed by Peter
"Little John" John and Dan "The Man" Ellis. Chris
"The Prisoner" Freeman also set a new P.B. at 33.48 knots, the
question is will he hit his goal of a 40 knot peak in his allotted 60
days. Follow his progress here:

There's a new leader in the rankings,
for the first time the kiters have stolen the lead from the Gorge
crowd. Jamie "Little Bro" Douglas laid down some sweet tracks with
solid numbers in every category. With a month to go until speed season
opens on the Columbia how long can the New England mob stay top gun?

The Maui team snuck up
quietly to regain second place in the HAM behind the Gorge team. Chris
"The Prisoner" Freeman has been drafted in by brother in law Tom "The
Devonshire Terrier" while he's on Daddy duty...congrats on little
Captain Jack! You can follow Chris' exploits on his
60 day blog. The Gorge Team is eagerly awaiting
the wind swinging to the NW so the Klick ditch can open for some speed
runs. Meanwhile the New England kiters are missing in action.
NEWS 05.04.10
As expected, poke a
sleeping bear with a stick and they wake up all aggressive. Well the
kiters are awake and they are on it. 55 knots over 100m, as expected
they will blitz that category. We may have to stick something in Rob
"The Accelerator" Douglas's food to slow him down. There's still the
nautical mile and alpha 500 jibe to give everyone else something to
fight for. As they say in the big leagues...Game On!

Tom "The Devonshire Terrier" is licking
his wounds after totaling his gear on one last run at the poo plant in
Maui.

While recovering he's enlisted the help of some pros to try and boost
the Maui team's numbers. First up is PWA pro Diony "The Venezuelan
Dingo" Guadagnino with a mega nautical mile over 30 knots and a sweet
23 knot jibe.

The Gorge Team's ironmen
of speed braved 60 knot gusts, frigid windchill and a ferocious spring
storm to put the toppings on the daily serving of speed. Choosing to
sail both sides of the mighty Columbia, Derek and his trusty sidekick
Alex (actually his son) took on mother nature and claimed some nice
40+ runs and two sweet alphas. Meanwhile the rest of the Gorge wussies
stayed home in their warm beds with their heads under the covers and
pretended they were asleep!

Derek "Dairy Queen"
Nielsen cracked the ice for the first '10 Gorge speed session. At a
chilly Klickitat River sandbar he laid down his marker with a 41.73
knot 100m dash before cold took over and froze his nuts off! We're
just waiting on those New Englanders to pump up their wings and
started blazing some tracks.

Tom "The Devonshire Terrier" continues
to post sessions on Maui while the rest of the challenge are slowly
waking up after a long winter hibernation. Just to get everyone
else jealous and inspired here's Tom's blog and video of the miserable
conditions he has to sail in at the Poo Plant.

Meanwhile the Gorge season began yesterday with Roo, Brian and Alex
getting their first water time for the year in toasty 40 degree water
and 60 degree air.

First
track posted for 010 by Tom "The Devonshire Terrier" Hammerton,
meanwhile the New England kiters are down in Florida training and
waiting for the ice to go out up north. The sneaky Derek "Dairy
Queen" Nielsen and 09's fastest sailor has been seen on the Oregon coast
trying to get a session in without anyone noticing! New feature
this year is the ability to download a sailor's fastest session, just
click on their speed to save the file.
NEWS 01.01.10
Another year another
speed challenge. For 2010, 3 teams from the Gorge, Maui and Northeast
are HAMing it up. This time it's personal with a true test of speed,
endurance and agility to see where the fastest sailors live. The New
England team of kiters may have the edge posting the best 3 100m runs
but the Maui boys have got the space to post 3 scorching Nautical mile
runs while the Gorge can turn it on for the best 3 alpha 500m jibes.
Each team's place in each category are added together for their
overall average and chance to steal the title of "fastest" from the
2009 Gorge champs.
